Does Your Business Have Roots?

When starting a business, you’ll hear many people advise you to locate a problem or opportunity in the market and offer a service that addresses that need.

This is great advice.

AND, if that’s all you’re considering, you’re setting yourself up to be a copycat business.

Also, you need to take more information into account.

I help my clients build businesses that do more than just address someone else’s problem.

I help them build businesses that tell a story about who they are.

I call these “businesses with roots.”

What Are Business Roots?

They are the 4 most essential elements that enrich and support your business endeavors; they are usually stable and seldom change, even as time goes by, progress is made, and big changes happen all around them.

Without these strong roots, it’s easy for your business to feel ungrounded or become unmoored, it’s easy for you, as a business owner, to lose your way, and it’s easy for your customers to be confused about who you are and what you do.

The first thing I work on with ALL of my clients is unearthing these 4 primary roots:

  • Goals

  • Strengths

  • Purpose

  • Values

While these might seem self-explanatory, let’s go into a bit more detail:

YOUR GOALS are what you seek to achieve, the compelling vision that guides you as you begin your journey as an entrepreneur. They keep you grounded and motivated as you grow, making sure you’re clear about what you’re trying to achieve and inspiring you to stretch toward your dreams.

YOUR STRENGTHS are the natural aptitudes you bring to the party. Though you may acquire skills and experience over time, your strengths remain relatively stable. They inform how you think and what you’re naturally great at. When you use your strengths, you are in a state of flow, and work doesn’t feel like a struggle. Establishing a business that’s anchored by your strengths gives you energy and confidence as you tackle the challenges ahead of you.

YOUR PURPOSE is your big WHY. It’s what you stand for. It’s what gives you the will to keep going, even when the going gets tough. It’s what you must remember in the moments when passion fades. It’s what makes it all worthwhile, through feast and famine, and difficult clients, through uncertainty and isolation.

YOUR VALUES are the principals you live by. The ideas and virtues you hold most dear.  These are the things that inform the WAY you do what you do. Your values keep you and your brand on track, and, often, the way your brand reflects your values is what attracts the right customers to you.

Without these 4 roots stretching deep and wide to support your business, it’s on shaky ground, easily blown over by a stiff wind, or damaged by a heavy rain. But as long as your roots remain strong, you’ll have what you need to sustain you.
